A personal loan EMI calculator works on the same principle as a general loan EMI calculator, just built for personal loans. It shows your monthly payment the moment you enter the loan amount, interest rate and tenure. You may also know it as an emi calculator personal loan tool, or a personal loan calculator emi. The numbers behind a personal loan look different from a car or home loan, since there's no asset backing it, which affects both your rate and how much you can borrow.
For how the EMI formula itself works, see our full loan EMI calculator. The math is identical; only the inputs above reflect how personal loans actually get priced and approved.
Here's what a few real personal loan scenarios look like
| Loan Amount | Interest Rate | Tenure | Monthly EMI | Total Interest | Total Payment |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹1,50,000 | 12% | 2 years | ₹7,061 | ₹19,465 | ₹1,69,465 |
| ₹3,00,000 | 14% | 3 years | ₹10,253 | ₹69,118 | ₹3,69,118 |
| ₹5,00,000 | 10.5% | 5 years | ₹10,747 | ₹1,44,817 | ₹6,44,817 |
| ₹10,00,000 | 18% | 5 years | ₹25,393 | ₹5,23,606 | ₹15,23,606 |
Why Personal Loan Rates Are Higher
The biggest reason is that a personal loan is unsecured. There's no property or car for the lender to fall back on if you stop paying, and that risk gets priced into the rate. Personal loan rates in India commonly run from around 10% to 24% a year (some lenders go higher for weaker credit profiles), compared to 7-9% for home and car loans. Your actual rate depends heavily on your credit score, income stability and existing debt. A 750+ CIBIL score is generally what gets you toward the lower end of that range.
How Lenders Decide What You Can Borrow
There's no Loan-to-Value ratio here, since there's no asset to value. Eligibility is based mostly on your income. Most lenders require a minimum net monthly salary somewhere between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 just to qualify, and typically won't approve a loan if your total EMI obligations (this one plus any existing loans) exceed 40-50% of your monthly income. Better rates, often below 12%, are usually reserved for borrowers with take-home pay well above ₹50,000. Before applying, run your existing obligations through a debt-to-income (DTI) calculator to see how much room a new EMI would leave you.
Factor In the Processing Fee
Personal loans tend to carry a noticeably higher processing fee than secured loans, commonly 2-3% of the loan amount and up to 5-6% at some NBFCs. On a ₹5,00,000 loan, a 3% fee is ₹15,000 taken off the top before you even see the money. It doesn't show up in the EMI figure at all, but it is very real, which is why the calculator above reports it separately. Always check this before comparing two lenders on interest rate alone. Our guide on personal loan processing fee works through how much it actually adds to your effective cost.
Can You Prepay a Personal Loan Without Penalty?
Yes. Since January 1, 2026, individual borrowers using the loan for personal (non-business) purposes can prepay or foreclose without penalty, regardless of fixed or floating rate. This is the same RBI rule that now covers car and home loans too. If your loan was sanctioned before this date, check your loan agreement, since older personal loans commonly carried a 2-5% foreclosure charge, especially in the first year.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a personal loan for anything I want?
Generally yes. Personal loans are typically unrestricted in end-use, covering things like medical expenses, weddings, travel or debt consolidation, unlike a car or home loan tied to a specific purchase.
What happens if I default on a personal loan?
Since there's no collateral, the lender can't seize an asset directly. But default still triggers collection action, a significant hit to your credit score and potential legal recovery proceedings. It's not consequence-free just because nothing's pledged.
Does a lower CIBIL score mean I can't get a personal loan at all?
Not necessarily, but you'll likely be offered a higher rate, a lower loan amount, or need a co-applicant. Some lenders specialize in below-750 profiles, just at a real cost in rate.
Can I transfer my personal loan to another lender for a better rate?
Yes, this is a balance transfer, same concept as with home loans. It's worth it mainly when the new rate is meaningfully lower and you've accounted for any processing fee on the new loan.
Does prepayment reduce my personal loan's EMI or tenure?
Same choice as with other loan types, and most lenders let you pick. Reducing tenure while keeping the EMI the same saves more total interest than reducing the EMI while keeping the tenure the same.
