Loan Interest Calculator – Calculate Total Loan Interest

 Loan Interest Calculator

Find out how much interest a loan will cost you in total, not just what the monthly EMI is.

Calculate Total Loan Interest

Works for any reducing-balance loan. Results update as you type.

Most people ask "what's my EMI?" The better question, the one that tells you what a loan costs, is "how much interest will I pay in total?" This loan interest calculator answers that second question for any reducing-balance loan: home, car, personal or otherwise. Enter the amount, the rate and the tenure, and it shows you the full interest bill, not just the monthly instalment. If you just want the monthly figure first, the loan EMI calculator gives you that in one step.

Why the same amount can cost such different amounts

₹5,00,000 borrowed for five years doesn't cost the same interest twice. It depends on what you're borrowing it for, because lenders price risk differently across loan types. A home loan is secured against the property, so it carries the lowest rate. A car loan is secured against the vehicle, so it sits in the middle. A personal loan has no collateral at all, so it carries the highest rate of the three.

As of August 2026, with the RBI repo rate holding at 5.25%, this is roughly what that plays out to for a ₹5,00,000 loan over 5 years, using a total interest calculator comparison across the three:

Loan typeRepresentative rate (Aug 2026)Monthly EMITotal interest paid
Home loan8.5% p.a.≈ ₹10,258≈ ₹1,15,496
Car loan9% p.a.≈ ₹10,379≈ ₹1,22,751
Personal loan11.5% p.a.≈ ₹10,996≈ ₹1,59,778

Same ₹5,00,000. Same 5-year tenure. A gap of roughly ₹44,000 in interest between the cheapest and the most expensive, purely from the collateral behind the loan. That gap is the reason "what's my EMI" is the wrong first question: two loans can carry EMIs within a few hundred rupees of each other and still differ by tens of thousands of rupees in what you actually pay back.

How the math works

Almost every loan in India today runs on reducing balance interest: interest is charged only on what you still owe, not on the original amount you borrowed. Every EMI is really two payments bundled into one. Part goes to interest on the outstanding balance, part goes to reducing the principal. Early in the loan, interest dominates. Late in the loan, principal dominates. A reducing balance interest calculator like this one runs that full month-by-month math and totals it up, so you don't have to estimate. If you want to see how that split compares to a flat-rate quote, our guide on flat rate vs reducing rate breaks down why the two aren't the same number.

EMI = [P × R × (1+R)^N] / [(1+R)^N − 1]

P is the principal, R is the monthly interest rate and N is the number of months. Total interest is simply (EMI × N) − P.

Why tenure changes the answer as much as rate does

Stretching a loan out lowers your EMI, but it doesn't lower your interest. It raises it, because you're paying interest for longer on a balance that comes down more slowly. Shortening the tenure does the opposite: higher EMI, lower total interest. If two lenders quote you similar rates but different maximum tenures, comparing total interest is what tells you which one costs less over the life of the loan. Our guide on tenure vs total interest walks through this trade-off in more depth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this work for any loan, or only certain types?

It works for any loan repaid through equal monthly instalments on a reducing balance: home, car, personal, education and most gold loan EMI schemes. It won't be accurate for flat-rate loans, since those charge interest differently (see our guide on reducing vs flat rate).

Why is my total interest higher than my bank's quoted rate seems to suggest?

Because the quoted rate is annual, but interest is charged against your outstanding balance every month, and a longer tenure means more months of interest before the principal is paid down. Use this loan interest rate calculator with your actual numbers to see the real total. If you want to reverse-engineer the rate a lender is effectively charging, the interest rate calculator solves for it from the EMI and principal.

This shows you the interest math. Approval, exact rate and final terms depend on your lender and your credit profile.
